What’s an
asset in the physical world can soon become a liability because of new
developments on the Internet. It’s very important to adapt the business to e-commerce.
Before, Fnac was only a big store, a physical place where people would walk around, read, listen to CDs, etc. Developing Fnac.com e-commerce website was necessary, but it meant putting in place complete logistics, different from what they mastered in their stores.
Imagination exercise :
Imagine that you are a little structure, four French pals deciding to sell bio-product (it's so trendy nowadays !). You don't have enough money to rent a store in the inner-town. You know a friend of your father who can provide you the products but his stocks are in another town. You have developed a great idea by setting up a partnership between you and a logistics company of a border country.
What would do ? ....
Use the Internet !! Create your own website according to your specific needs, like a virtual store. Set up your head quarters in a little town with low rent (and it's really suit to bio-product selling). Set up an efficient information system to keep you in relation with your different partners. Use IP phone, mails, video conference to communicate without spoiling too much money. Design your website as you want to attract customers. Take advantage of CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and database technologies to keep your audience loyal.... Good luck !
Finally what did you win :
- no physical store to manage (less employees, less furniture
- no stocks
- no product transport between providers and shops
- and so much more ....
