The new barbarian words of the e-culture : hackerpots and honeypots

  HACKERPOTS

AND HONEYPOTS

Here comes again one of those barbarian names that the e-culture created to make one's feeling old-fashioned.

Hackerpots and honeypots, although it makes you think about childhood and teenagehood, are both words of the hackers world.

Honeypot is a booby trap meant for hackers. It is an open computer that is left waiting for someone to find an d exploit. After they are exploited they are monitored for a time in order to gather data of what the hackers are doing, and then legal action is often taken against them.
U.S. Government uses those machines to lure hackers in spite of the legal issues. It acts like a honay pot for a bear, because it is placed on the Internet wide open for redirect or attack. Everything that is done on or through the system is logged and traced. The hacker is hacked.

Hackerpot is the counter-attack of the Web pirates. Today, anyone with limited knowledge can get past a firewell or infect a computer.

It easier and easier to become a hacker, although it  represents more risks thant before thanks to the law enforcements. That's how they found out to make themselves honey pots. All a hacker need to do is to put a proxy server up on his and wait for a scanner to find it. Then the honey pot runned by the hacker is gathering every data on your computer, such as your credit cards numbers, critical passwords.

To sum up, even if you don't know if it's either a Government agency or a hacker, there will be always somebody watching you when you'll be using an open proxy server. That's just great. Let's hope some charitable souls will help normal users.
