A social network is a group
of people united around something: an experience, a job, a hobby, or just a
desire to be connected to each other.
An example on the Internet,
could be Linked In, a business oriented social networking site, mainly used for
professional networking.

Registered users can have a
list of “connections”, meaning people they know and trust in business. Each
person's network contains first their direct connections, but also each of
their connections connections (called second degree connections) and also the
third degree connections.
People can use this network to find jobs or people, they can recommend (or be recommended by) someone...
